YOUTH ORIENTATION
Keep Our Youth Involved in the Great Outdoors.

The love of the Great Outdoors will always be passed along. Not only with my children, but with their friends as well. There is nothing more exciting than seeing the look on a youngsters face right after they catch their first fish, or shoot their first whitetail. Keep your family tradition going, pass it on to your Family and Friends. There is no better place to spend time with your Family and Friends than in God's Country.
God Bless you All,
Brian Harford

"Hooked on Fishing - Not on Drugs"
Overview of Problem
There is a clear lack of services in the Deltona/Southwest Volusia area with little or no drug and alcohol prevention programs for youths. The reported use of drugs by school age youths is continuing to increase in our community. Compulsive Outdoors adopted a new program that is based in Deltona that has a new and different approach to prevention that has been very successful in other communities around the country.
The "Hooked on Fishing - Not on Drugs" program is a registered trademark of the Future Fisherman Foundation. The program has received many national recognition awards. Such as:
The American School Board Journal and the Executive Educator's selection as one of the 100 most creative educational ideas in North America
U.S. Department of Justice Award for Public Service
Award of Excellence from the American Society of Executives in the Advance America Awards Program
Purpose of program
"Hooked on Fishing-Not On Drugs" begins with the premise that most youth do not use drugs and that positive alternatives such as fishing can keep children from drug use. One of it's primary purposes, therefore, is to enhance the development of life skills that divert children from using drugs. It focuses primarily on positive messages: fishing is a better answer than drug use; building children's academic and life skills through sport fishing/aquatic education is an important drug prevention strategy; and appropriate adult/community guidance is necessary for youths to participate in wholesome, healthy activities
Research shows that activities which provide recognition, one-on-one relationships, and adventurous non-drug leisure are effective in changing students' drug use behaviors. "Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs" does all of that and more. As part of this wider perspective on prevention, "Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs" is built around the theme of responsibility: individual, civic, and environmental. Responsibility for self and others is important to develop a sense of community.
The "Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs" program provides lessons and activities to help youth 5 - 17 years if age see that they are an important part of the community, and that responsible behavior includes not using drugs and helping keep their community drug free. The theme of responsibility encourages basic citizenship, ethical behavior when fishing, and stewardship of aquatic and natural resources. It also emphasizes generally accepted values - such as setting goals, helping friends, and exercising self-discipline. Fishing activities are geared to teach children these caring and productive values.
What we need for our program
Community support for program materials needed such as sponsoring a monthly event, donation of fishing equipment, etc.
Adults willing to become "Adult Fishing Buddies" for youth who do not have a parent or guardian who can come to the monthly events.
Partnerships with environmental groups who can help to provide the education and activities for environmental education for our youth.
Money to hire staff to support the program and develop our capacity to engage a large number of young people in one of our program components.
If you are interested in sponsoring one of our programs please call us at 386-479-3266 e-mail info@compulsiveoutdoors.com .
